Growing Basil

Basil is one plant in your garden that’s an annual. Typically, basil plants need soil temperatures of 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and are frost sensitive. If you’re considering adding any variety of basil to your garden, here are some growing suggestions:

  • Basil plants need about six to eight hours of sun daily but also benefit from afternoon shade in warmer climates.
  • Plant your basil transplants about two weeks after the last spring frost.
  • Plants should be spaced 12 to 18 inches apart.
  • The soil should have a pH of 6.0 to 7.0, with minimal fertilizer added. Additionally, it should remain moist in a well-drained location.
  • When harvesting, you should pinch leaves from stems after the plants are six to eight inches tall. Harvest all leaves before the first frost.
